Unlocking Potential: The Power of Gamification in Employee Data Science Learning

The "Unlocking Potential: The Power of Gamification in Employee Data Science Learning" project at Carnegie Mellon University's Center for Transformational Play developed data literacy training through two gamified modules.

The idea behind the first game was to target managers by using decision-making simulations to highlight the importance and impact of data-driven business choices. Managers engaged in realistic scenarios where they could practice interpreting data and making strategic decisions based on their analysis. This immersive experience aimed to build confidence in using data as a key component of leadership and strategy development.

The second game was designed for practitioners, focusing on hands-on challenges that required effective data analysis and application in various business contexts. Practitioners tackled tasks simulating real-world data problems, encouraging them to apply their analytical skills to uncover insights and make informed recommendations. This approach aimed to enhance their technical proficiency and practical understanding of data science principles, ensuring they could contribute valuable insights to their organizations.

Both games leveraged gamification strategies to enhance learning. Elements like points, badges, leaderboards, and levels were used to motivate participants and foster a sense of achievement. By integrating these features, the project created an engaging and interactive learning environment that kept employees invested in their progress and development.

The concept was to provide role-specific training that was relevant to managers and practitioners. For managers, the focus was on strategic decision-making and leadership, while for practitioners, the emphasis was on technical skills and practical application. This ensured that each group received training that was pertinent and beneficial to their roles.
